Winter is dead, long live the Spring! Throw open those windows and feel the relief wash over you with the delicious breeze. The bright blue skies and much-yearned-for sunshine are here to herald a fresh new start.
It was a long, SAD-afflicted COVID winter - talk about a perfect storm! - and we’re itching to enjoy the rising temperatures and longer hours of sunshine. And what better way to make use of our newfound joie de vivre than to drag our homes out into the sun with us? It’s the perfect time to give our space a little refresh and really get it ready for spring - read on for a whole lot of ideas on how to usher this bright green season into your home!
SPRING CLEANING - INSIDE AND OUT!
Spring cleaning is about as ground-breaking a concept for the season as florals, but there’s a reason it’s tried and true. The shutters open and that bright April sunshine shows us everything we’ve been sweeping under the rug since October. Cleaning out our closets and scrubbing and dusting are pretty standard for spring cleaning, but read on for some slightly less standard spring cleaning suggestions.
Wash your walls. We stare at them every day, so it’s easy not to notice that they’re slowly getting dusty or less vibrant. Grab a bucket, some gentle soap and a sponge or a wash cloth and give them a good once-over and see how that can absolutely restore your space. (Make sure you know what kind of paint you used, so that you can match your cleaning supplies accordingly.)
Replace your filters. Air purifiers, humidifiers, Britas, and *definitely* your stove hood - replacing these filters is so easy to forget! Especially considering how much more time we’ve all spent at home, making use of these filters, it’s definitely the time to swap ‘em out.
Vacuum or wash textiles that don’t get top billing. You know - the blankets that live on the couch. The curtains in your living room. That cushion on the armchair that doesn’t get used too much. Take this chance to freshen them up! While you’re at it, give the things that do the washing a washing up too - if you’re anything like us, your washing machine could probably use some attention.
Give your yard some attention. After the ice and snow of winter, your lawn will need some TLC. Tend to the bare patches, do some hand-weeding, and do some fertilizing. Get rid of any broken branches and prune your trees and shrubs. Think ahead to summer and get some flowers planted - we love dahlias and gladiolas for the warm months! And check in on your perennials and see what kind of loving they might need.
Apart from the greenery, give your yard furniture a once-over for any winter damage and a nice rinse. Clean your grill and give your lawnmower and tune-up. Ice and snow can decimate pavement - give your curb appeal a boost by redoing your driveway. Replace your siding - or, if it’s in good shape but a little dingy, give it a fresh coat of paint.
And if you’re in the market for some updating, the spring is the PERFECT time to redo your patio or refinish your deck. Check out some of our hardscaping offerings - we’re big fans of our Arterra True Bluestone Porcelain pavers for a pop of color, or for a more natural tone, our Arterra Palmwood Walnut porcelain pavers. If your deck is yearning for a new lease on life, there’s no better way to go than Osmo. Whether you’re looking for a natural sheen or ready to infuse your space with some color, we’ve got VOC-free products made from natural components that are easy to use and look absolutely incredible. Check them out here!
COLOR: be bold!
I can’t speak for anyone else, but winter and fall always leave me reaching for the darker (and softer) pieces in my wardrobe. Now that spring is here, it’s time to push those to the side and reach for some color - why not apply that energy to your space, too?
Been thinking about painting your walls? GO FOR IT. Whether you want to do a whole room, a contrast wall or even just an accent piece, bring some new spark to your space with color. Our sunny yellow Citrine is a no-brainer for this, but we wouldn’t sleep on Angelite or Rhodonite either. Or, if you’re super bold - go for an abstract or geometric mural using all three!
New textiles. New textiles! Invest in some new cushions. New bedding! Is there anything better than fresh linens? Some whimsical hand or dish towels are a way to do this on a small scale. You can’t go wrong with light, gauzy curtains, or a new blanket for your couch, either.
Some other ways to introduce color are with dishware and glassware, or, for the green enthusiast - fresh flowers!
SPRUCE UP THE FLOORS
Now that the windows can be wide open and you can air your space out, it’s a good time to think about bigger changes, like updating your flooring. Whether you’re ready to rip out and start from scratch, or you want to float something on top of your existing flooring, the spring is a great season to install some SPC. Small spaces? Go with a lighter color to make the space seem larger and airier. Ready for some drama? Go dark and moody - it’s a sensational modern look. Whatever you choose, make sure you get color samples, and that you like the way they look in all kinds of natural light.
It’s also a great time to pay some attention to your hardwood floors. Get yourself some protective gear and get to re-staining! The open windows will keep the sanding dust from getting uncomfortable and the ventilation will help the stain dry. Just be sure to check the weather so you know what’s coming, and can plan accordingly.
People say that New Year’s is the time for resolutions - but the tangible relief of spring makes for a wonderful climate for refreshing and making some changes. Wanted to go more sustainable in January, but SADs got you down? Bring some silicon ziplocs and beeswax wrappers into your home now; they’ll be perfect for spring picnics and COVID-safe gatherings in the park. Want to shop local? Look for recipes that feature spring produce - think bright flavors and green vegetables. Drink more water and style some outfits that are out of your comfort zone. It’s Aries season - be bold and have fun!
