New month, new focus! Decorner is making moves and taking no prisoners - mainly because we don’t believe in holding people against their will, of course. It’s a really exciting time to be a part of this small but booming business. We had pretty conservative expectations for the beginning of the year, since January is historically a pretty quiet month for businesses after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, so we were (very positively) taken aback by the huge interest expressed in Decorner these past couple of months.
We’re constantly trying to improve the Decorner experience for our collaborators and our customers, so we’ve got a lot of plans to improve our look, our footprint and our impact on our community. We’re really excited about some of the things we have planned, so read on for a peek into some of our recent triumphs, ongoing projects and upcoming plans!
DECORNER IN DOMINO: OUR FIRST FEATURE!
I was sitting in my car outside of a laundromat on a recent snowy February morning, commiserating virtually with our CEO, Olga Vilkova, about the challenges of managing a small business, when she very abruptly changed the course of our conversation. Our collaborator-turned-pal Letitia Kiu had just sent her the link to a feature on her gorgeous living room update by none other than the giant of giants that is Domino Mag.
Letitia had been renovating her first home and used our Cyrus Sandino SPC flooring in her living room, and her brilliant re-styling of the space garnered a lot of well-deserved attention. She had a whole lot of vintage parquet to deal with, and she was super relieved when Olga told her that she wouldn’t have to completely tear it up. The easy floating installation was a huge draw for Letitia and a major focus of the article, which was a great point of excitement for us, since the do-it-yourself quality of the SPC is something that’s very important to us. Letitia is a super handy gal, so we knew she would handle it like a pro, but her first-timer stamp of approval was a much appreciated accolade.
Peep the before and after shots, and then head on over to Domino to read the whole article. You can also hear more from Letitia about the process of choosing the flooring as well as the installation on her YouTube channel.
FACELIFT FOR THE STOREFRONT: WE’RE RENOVATING!
We’re very proud of our home at the Improve Canada Mall, and Olga’s been planning a massive remodel of the space to make it more functional for our needs for quite a while. We had been planning to start the remodel in March, but in our typical fashion, we’re way ahead of schedule and have already been in the midst of renovations for about a month! Olga had to flex some new muscles and actually design the space, planning the demolition and configuration of the new space. She basically gutted the whole unit - two of them, actually! - and we’re excited to finally start the aesthetic stuff, such as choosing the floor and the wall color as well as all the exciting decor elements.
We called in the cavalry and brought our favorite interior design maven, Katie Davis of @sprucedesign_nyc, on board to consult on the decor. We’re huge fans of her work and follow her account with some serious fervor, but it was an absolute privilege to get some insight into her process. She’s unbelievably meticulous and picked up on all of Olga’s ideas, finding several ways to execute them and giving a ton of immaculate product suggestions. We were floored by the package she sent over and we can’t wait to start decorating the place. We’re thinking a combination of our Lapis and Herkimer recycled paints, with the White Ocean SPC flooring and some dramatic touches in the form of one of our favorite tiles, the Nero Marquina. We’ll be filming a lot of content when we start bringing things into the space, including some paint and flooring tutorials with none other than Olga at the reigns, so be sure to keep tabs on our socials to follow along.
NEW ADDITIONS: CAL!
We were so excited to start working with Cal Campos last month, and we’re even more excited to be welcoming them on board as our in-house media producer. Content galore! We’ll be working closely with them to create gorgeous, on-brand images of all of our products, as well as content for all of our socials, promo videos, instructional content - the works! We’ve got a whole lot of ideas and can’t wait to see how this brilliant creator will execute them.
It’s a huge privilege to get to welcome new team members. Building the Decorner family is something we approach incredibly carefully and seriously, but we’re all smiles over Cal.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE: WORKING WITH WEST STREET RECOVERY!
Giving back to the community is something that is really important to the Decorner team on an individual basis, but we’re taking steps to do that as a company, too. My dear friend and colleague Alexandra Smither (we’re both multifaceted hustlers whose training and backbone is opera) reached out to us on behalf of West Street Recovery, a grassroots non-profit organization supporting and rebuilding communities impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Decorner is donating a home’s worth of paint to an ongoing rebuild in Houston. We’re so excited to be working with West Street: I’ve watched their work by way of Ally’s social media and they’re an incredible group of people who do truly incredible things. The individuals of West Street Recovery are passionate, community-minded, and tirelessly hard-working. It’s our privilege to be able to participate in the difference they are making and we can’t wait to see how our paint transforms their build! Be sure to head over to their website and learn all about them and the wonderful work they do.
STRIVING FOR SUSTAINABILITY: NEW STEPS!
We kicked the year off with Sustainability Week, but we’re working hard to make every week more sustainable than the last. Beyond making small changes of our own - we’re currently thoroughly obsessed with making our homes more eco-friendly in the form of reusable silicon bags and these beeswax wraps by GTA favorites The Green Jar - we’ve got big plans for improving Decorner’s footprint.
We’ve recently added five new colors to Refuge, our line of recycled paints. We might be a bit of a broken record when it comes to Refuge, but it’s only because recycled paint is a seriously big gun when it comes to sustainability! Paint production is incredibly wasteful, using up a lot of energy and creating a whole lot of toxic byproducts. Using recycled paint not only conserves the energy that producing new paint would use, but also eliminates the byproducts that production would have created. Our initial launch contained mainly cool colors - blues and greys galore! - but the five new colors cover the bases of warmer neutrals as well as some seriously lovely pops of color. Lovers of pink and yellow, this drop is definitely for you! Check out Rhodonite and Citrine, as well as the entire Refuge collection, on our website.
The product we sell the most is our SPC vinyl flooring, and one of the ways we make that work via e-commerce is by offering sample orders. You can order small 7”x4” tiles of our SPC planks to check on color and specs in your space, to make sure you get exactly what you’re looking for. We’ve realized, though, that this practice isn’t exactly sustainable. We want to to be moving forward with reducing our waste; the glass jars for our paint samples, for example, are recyclable and reusable. In that vein, we’re currently working on a plan to institute a return program for those samples so that they can get recycled and reused instead of dumped. We’ve also updated the packaging for our tile samples and have opted for recycled plastic to cushion the more delicate pieces. We had high hopes for 2021: that it would be a year of much positive change, growth, and forward momentum. Somehow, it has already exceeded our expectations! We’re thinking big and getting ready to expand even more. We’ve got big ideas about new content we’ll be creating in our studio space - podcast, anybody? - and we can’t wait to resume face-to-face contact (albeit separated by masks and maybe some plexiglass) with our customers. We’ve got collaborations in the works and we can’t wait to share them with you. If you’ve purchased our products and installed them in your space, please do reach out and share any images or footage you may have - we’re always so proud of what our customers create! If you’ve got ideas for projects, improvements or community involvement, we’re always open to suggestions - drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org. Decorner is taking 2021 by storm - join us as we expand up and up and up!
